The First Lady For Vogue

And I love the fact that she isn’t portrayed as delicate or soft. Indigo is associated with royalty and nobility but also with austere strength. The way she’s posed and interacting with the camera—no demurely averted gaze ala Jackie O. She’s staring at the photographer, staring them down.

Not adversarial, but assertive

It’s typical of models not to look at the camera, or if they are they are hunched over, or looking at the camera over their shoulder with their back turned towards the camera; both the hunched and showing your back are submissive positions.  But the first lady is staring directly at the camera with her front (or atleast part of it) facing the camera as well; very assertive and self confident.
